"Dreamscape" for Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano(2014/Korea premiere)

나는 꿈은 종종 믿을 수 없을 정도로 생생하며 또한 인생의 극적인 포인트에 대한 초현실적인 재해석과
앞으로 올 수 있는 것에 대한 예측으로 구성된다고 생각한다. 꿈에서 방문한 장소는 익숙하지만 동시에
이상하고, 광경이 아름다우며 괴기스럽기까지 하다. 또한, 꿈에서 사람들은 그들의 현실 세계와 완전히
다른 이미지를 비추기도 한다. 이 작품은 꿈속에서 나의 마음의 눈앞에서 펼쳐지는 많은 격동의 장면을
목격하면서 느끼는 감정의 파도와 함께 이러한 역설을 음악으로 표현하고자 하였다.
 
My dreams are often incredibly vivid, frequently consisting of surreal reinterpretations of dramatic
points in my life and predictions of what may yet come. Locations visited withinn tend to be familiar
yet at the same time strange, the sights simultaneously beautiful and grotesque, and the people both
mirror images and complete opposites of their real-world counterparts. This piece captures these kinds
of paradoxes along with the waves of emotion I feel as I witness the many tumultuous scenes unfold before
my mind's eye.

Michael Stubblefield

작곡가이자 기타리스트 그리고 교사인 Michael Stubllefield는 샌프란시스코 만(San Francisco Bay)에서
태어나고 자랐다. 그는 캘리포니아 주립 대학(California State University)에서 음악 학사 및 석사 학위를 취득했고
East Bay에서는 Jeffrey Miller, Frank La Rocca 그리고 Daniel Highman과 함께 작곡 및 음악이론을 공부했으며
Marc Teicholz에게 클래식 기타를 배웠다. CSUEB에서의 대학원 과정을 밟는 동안, Michael은 음악학과의 협력 교사였으며
작곡전공으로 2015 Glenn Glasow Graduate Fellowship을 받았다. 현재 Michael은 코네티컷 주 웨스트 하트 포드의
하트 포드 대학교에서 박사과정(작곡) 중이고 Robert Carl과 David Macbride에게 사사하고 있다. 그의 음악 스타일은

Composer, guitarist, and teacher Michael Stubblefield was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.
He earned his BA and MA degrees in music from California State University, East Bay where he studied music
composition and theory with Jeffrey Miller, Frank La Rocca, and Daniel Highman, and classical guitar with Marc Teicholz.
During his graduate studies at CSUEB, Michael was a graduate teaching associate for the music department and was
awarded the 2015 Glenn Glasow Graduate Fellowship in Music Composition. Currently, Michael is a Doctor of
Musical Arts candidate in music composition at the Hartt School, University of Hartford in West Hartford,
Connecticut, where he has studied with Robert Carl and David Macbride. His musical style can be described as a
blend between Dmitri Shostakovich and heavy metal music, in addition to Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Arvo Pärt,
Edgard Varese, J.S.Bach, and Krysztof Penderecki. Michaels music has received numerous performances across
the Bay Area and at the Hartt School, and he has worked with the Redshift Ensemble, Opus Project Ensemble,
Cygnus Ensemble, CSUEB New Music Ensemble, Hartt Orchestra, and Hartt Composers Ensemble among others.

"East" for Woodwind Quintet(2017)

2017년에 쓰여 진 작품 ‘East’는 나의 친구이자 샌프란시스코만 출신의 플루트 연주자인 Alan Kingsley로부터 위촉된 작품이다.
이 곡은 대학원을 위하여 Bay Area에서 East coast로 향하던 여정, East Coast 문화와 환경에 대한 나의 적응기, 그리고 결과적으로
나의 작곡기법이 어떻게 발전되었는지 그려내고 있다.
이 작품은 대칭적인 회문(팰린드롬)을 형성하는 8개의 악장으로 이루어져 있다. 앞의 1-4악장은 그 다음에 뒤따라오는 4개의 악장(5-8악장)과
대칭된다. 이 과정에서 후속 악장들은 선두악장들의 아이디어를 취하지만 새롭고 추상적인 방식으로 그것들을 재해석한다.
오프닝 악장 ’Awake’는 이른 아침 내 모험의 시작이다. 비록 미지의 여행지에 대한 불안감이 있지만, 이것이 나의 모험을 막을 수는 없었다.
2악장  ‘Greenllit’는 미국을 가로 지르는 여행을 묘사한다. 길을 가는 동안, 나의 고향에 작별 인사를 한다.4악장과 5악장에서는 날씨(Statosphere)와
내가 발견했던 새로운 음악적 미학(Electrocircus)의 측면에서 East Coast의 분위기를 보여준다. East Coast에 있는 동안, 나는 8개의 Ivy league 대학을
방문하기로 했는데, 이것은 6악장 ‘Operation Ivy’의 기반이 된다. 일곱 번째 악장인 ‘Messiaen과 Rushes’는 작곡가 올리버 메시앙과 록밴드 러쉬의
조합을 특징으로 하여, 나의 오래된 것과 함께 새로운 음악적 영감을 보여준다. 피날레 ‘Flashback’은 이전 악장들의 음악적 재료를 재생하며,
7악장부터 시작하여 1악장으로 끝이 난다. 피날레는 1악장의 시작과 같은 음악적 형태로 마무리 되며 그 East 여행이 마침내 완성되었음을 나타낸다.

East was commissioned by my friend Alan Kingsley, flautist from the San Francisco Bay Area and written throughout the year of 2017.
It portrays my journey from the Bay Area to the east coast for graduate school, my adjusting to the environment and culture of the east coast,
and how my own compositional voice has developed as a result. The piece is in eight movements that form a symmetrical palindrome.
Movements one through four are mirrored by movements five through eight. In the process, the latter movements take ideas from the earlier movements
they imitate but reinterpret them in a new, abstract way.
The opening movement, Awaken, is the beginning of my adventure in the early morning. Although there is a sense of anxiety as I travel into the unknown,
that doesn't stop me from taking the adventure. Movement two, Greenlit, portrays the road trip across the United States. While on the road,
I give one last goodbye to my homeland (Farewell). Movements four and five show the atmosphere of the east coast, both in terms of weather(Stratosphere)
and new musical aesthetics I have discovered (Electrocircus). While on the east coast, I decided to try to visit all eight Ivy League universities,
which is what the sixth movement, Operation Ivy, is based on. The seventh movement, Messes and Rushes, features a blend of composer Oliver Messiaen
and rock band Rush, showing one of my new musical inspirations with an older one. The finale, Flashbacks, replays musical material from the previous
movements, starting with the seventh movement and ending with the first movement. The finale closes with the same musical figure that started the
first movement, signaling that the journey east is finally complete.

신혁진 / Shin, Hyuk-Jin

작곡가 신혁진은 1976년 서울 태생으로 연세대학교 학사, 호주 퀸즐랜드 대학교석사(MPhil), 미국 미시건 대학교에서 박사 학위(DMA)를 취득하였다.
귀국 이후에는 21세기악회, 창악회, ISCM Korea, ACL-Korea 회원으로 다양한 국내외 음악제와 음악회를 통해 작품을 발표하고 있다.
2012년 ARKO 창작음악제에서 관현악곡 “까치소리”를 발표하였으며, 같은 작품이 2014년 체코 Janáček Philharmonic, 루마니아 Timișoara 오케스트라에 의해
각각 재연되었다.
작곡에 있어서 색채와 패턴에 관심을 보이는 그는 2014년 한국문화예술위원회 후원으로 진행된 작곡발표회 “음악과 영감”을 선보이기도 하였다.
2015년도에 대중음악 앨범인 “사랑은 어떻게 오는가”를 발매한 싱어송라이터이기도 한 그는 2016년에 두 차례 단독 콘서트를 가졌다.
최근에는 에스닉 밴드 프로젝트 락, 화음쳄버오케스트라, 소리울앙상블, 프렌즈오브뮤직 등과 같은 연주 단체와 다양한 연주자들에게 작품을 위촉받아 작품을
발표하고 있으며, 2018년부터는 전북대학교에 조교수로 재직하고 있다.

Born in 1976 in Seoul Korea, Hyukjin Shin studied both metallurgical engineering and music composition (BMus) in Yonsei University. He continued his
musical study while acquiring masters and doctoral degree, respectively from the University of Queensland in Australia and the University of Michigan in USA.
His orchestral piece, “The Cry of Magpies” was premiered in ARKO contemporary music festival in 2012, and it was performed by Janáček Philharmonic in Czech
and Timișoara Philharmonic in Romania in 2014. He had his recital “Music and Inspiration”, which showed his unique interest in color and pattern in composition
in 2014. He is also a singer-songwriter who published his own album, “How the Love Comes” in 2015 and had two recitals presenting these songs.
Recently, he has been commissioned pieces by performers and various performers’ groups, such as Ethnic Pop Group ‘Project Rock’, Hwaeum Chamber Orchestra,
Soriwool Ensemble. Since 2018, he has been a faculty member of Chonbuk National University.

"Danse d'Amour(사랑의 춤)" for Violin, Cello and Piano

사랑과 춤만큼이나 음악과 밀접한 것이 있을까? 일정한 비트와 음악 소재의 반복적 사용을 특징으로 하는 댄스 음악이 가져오는 원초적인 흥분, 적당한 신체 접촉과
은밀히 교환되는 눈빛, 그리고 그 모든 것이 맞아 떨어질 때의 유쾌한 교감, 이 모든 것이 바로 남녀 간의 사랑과 춤, 그리고 음악이 만들어내는 인류의 원초적 쾌락일 것이다.
그 안에서 사랑이 무르익고, 춤 기술은 고도화되며, 음악이 발전하였다. 뜨거운 사랑과 예술적 갈망은 오랫동안 한 몸이었다고 할 수 있다. 이 작품은 춤과 함께 그려지는
그러한 낭만성을 영감으로 하여 작곡하였다.
The Magnetic Fields라는 미국 인디 팝 그룹의 “The Book of Love”* 이라는 노래에서 ‘사랑이라는 책이 있다며, 음악은 사실 거기에서 시작되었고, 분명 거기에는 춤 교본이
포함되었을 것’이라고 노래한다. 춤, 음악, 사랑이 만들어내는 아름다운 조합, 아쉽게도 춤을 못 추는 나에게는 단지 부러움의 대상일 뿐이다.

Is there any closer relationship between music, love and dance? The primitive excitement that dance music with Steady beats and repetitive patterns brings in,
certain physical interacts and exchanging eyes between partners and the communication through gestures without words are the very basic form of the human being’s
pleasure which is the amalgam of love, dance and music. In this relation, we have felt love, dance has become sophisticated and music has been developed. Passionate
love and aspiration to arts are inseparable. This piece is based on the romanticism regarding dance and love.
The America indie pop group, The Magnetic Fields, once said “The book of love has music in it. In fact that’s where music comes from. It’s full of charts and facts
and figures, and instructions for dancing.” in their song, The Book of Love *. The beautiful combination between dance, music and love is just an admiration to me who
cannot dance at all.

박정은 / Park, Jung-Eun

작곡가 박정은은 1986년 8월 16일 서울 출신이며 추계예술대학교에서 작곡 학사과정을 수석으로 졸업하고(사사:김연수,김혜자) 한양대학교에서 작곡 석사과정 졸업 후(사사:임종우)
독일 하노버 국립음대에서 작곡 석사과정을 최고점수로 졸업하고(사사: rebecca saunders, oliver schneller) 뒤셀도르프 국립음대에서 작곡 우수과정(Exellenzstudiengang Komposition)을
졸업하였다.(사사: josé m. sánchez-verdú)
그녀의 작품은 독일 비텐(Witten)의 현대 실내악 음악제(Wittener Tagen für neue Kammermusik), 독일라디오 현대음악 포럼(Forum neuer Musik 2014, 2015), 독일 한국음악제-다름슈타트,
헤렌하우즌 예술제(KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen), 칼스루에 미디아센터(ZKM), 하노버 국립박물관, 베를린-Bak theater berlin, 바이마르-Franz Liszt Stipend Weimar, iscm
world music days, Langen Nacht der Kirchen in Hannove, 아르헨티나- Sala Delmira Agustini del Teatro Solís, Urguay, 통영국제음악제, 범음악제, 서울창작음악제 등 다양한 페스티발에서
연주되었다.
또한 서독일 라디오(WDR)와 독일라디오(Deutschlandfunk)에서 그녀의 작품이 여러 차례 방송되었다. 그녀의 작품은 오스트리아 Klangforum Wien-impuls 국제 콩쿨, 독일 지그부르그 작곡 콩쿨,
ISCM 세계 음악제,  Komponistenwettbewerb Stuttgart "Von fremden Ländern und Menschen" 입상하고 독일라디오의 위촉으로 2015년에 쾰른의 성 페터교회에서 작곡 레지던스를,
음악과 여성의 연구장학금, DAAD 장학금(2014-15), 독일장학금(Deutschlandstipendien)을 받았다.
그리고 영국 Birmingham Contemporary Music Group(BCMG), 니더작센 주 과학문화부, project21AND, 앙상블 TIMF팀프, 통영국제음악제, 독일라디오 현대음악 포럼, Klangforum Wien(2019) 등에서
다양한 작품을 위촉 받았다. 그녀의 작품은 독일출판사 Helbling Verlag에서 출판되었다.
현재 추계예술대학교, 한양대학교에 출강중이다.

Iung-Eun Park was born on 16.8.86 in Seoul, Southkorea. She studied composition at Chugye Art University and Hanyang University, and with Rebecca Saunders, Oliver Schneller,
as well as José María SánchezVerdú at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover.
Her works were performed at KunstFestSpielen Herrenhausen 2013 and 2014, at ZKM Karlsruhe, in Landesmuseum Hannover, in Sprengel Museum Hannover, at Forum neuer Musik
„Die Wilden Jungen 1914 – 2014“ from Deutschlandfunk in Köln, at the Wittener Tagen für neue Kammermusik 2014 „NEWCOMER KONZERT“ on WDR3, at the Korean Musicfestival Deutschland
in Darmstadt, Bak theater berlin, Sala Delmira Agustini del Teatro Solís, Urguay, tongyeong international music festival 2017, Birmingham Contemporary Music festival,

Jung-Eun Park won prizes as 41th and 42th Seoul Composition Music Festival and the 38th and 39th Pan Music Festival ISCM Korea, Siegburger Composition Competition,Komponistenwettbewerb
Stuttgart "Von fremden Ländern und Menschen"  and was a finalist in the 2015 Franz List Weimar scholarship competition for young composers. Her works were performed by different
Ensembles, like Ensemble Schwerpunkt, Ensemble Hand Werk, Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble Musikfabrik , Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie – IEMA etc. Commission for a brassquintet
2013 and an organ piece 2014 from Deutschlandfunk and Klangforum Wien(2019, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group(BCMG). She was Composer in Residence at Sankt Peter Köln. She received
scholarships for foreign student from DAAD 2014-15, Düsseldorf, and from Research-center music and gender(2013-2014), Hannover. she gives lectures at Hanyang University.

"Allegro(빠르게)" for Clarinet, Violin, Cello and Piano(2017)

이 작품은 짧고 빠른 음가들의 다양한 리듬모형들의 생성, 변화, 소멸되는 과정을 4개의 악기 간의 음색 적 조화 혹은 부딪힘을 통해 표현하고자 하였다. 소리들의 갑작스러운 끊김,
날카로운 글리산도의 방향들, 갑자기 등장하는 하모니 등등 빠르고 동적인 순간순간들을 그리 자연스럽지 않게 이어 붙여 나가 보았다.

Larry Alan Smith(미국/초청작곡가)

(1955년 10월 4일, 미국 오하이오 캔튼 출생) Larry Alan Smith는 미국과 이태리에서 지내며 작곡가, 지휘자, 피아니스트, 교육자, 예술감독 및 시인/작가로 활동하고 있다.
뉴욕 데뷔 이후, 그는 뉴욕타임즈로 부터 “뛰어난 재능의 젊은 작곡가”라는 찬사를 받았다. 이후 오늘날의 훌륭한 솔리스트, 챔버 앙상블과 오케스트라 등 많은 연주자들이
그의 작품을 연주, 위촉하고 있다.
그는 하트포드대학의 하트스쿨에서 작곡과 교수로 재직 중이며 또한 이 학교의 유명 의 큐레이터로도 활동하고 있다. Smith는 파리에서 Nadia Boulanger와
공부하였으며 쥴리어드 대학에서는 Vincent Persichetti의 제자였다.

Following his New York debut concert, he was praised by The New York Times as “a young composer of great gifts.” Since that time, many of today’s outstanding soloists, chamber ensembles
and orchestras have performed and commissioned his music.
He is Professor of Composition at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford (Connecticut) where he also serves as the curator of the School’s prestigious Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series.
Dr. Smith studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and graduated from The Juilliard School as a student of Vincent Persichetti. He has been on the faculty of The Juilliard School, and he has served

Wind Quintet No. 2 – “Three Bas-Reliefs”

나는 언제나 평평한 돌이나 나무로 된 받침대를 가져다 원하는 그림이 명확히 보일 때까지 작은 조각을 떼어 내어 만든 조각상이나 조각품에 매료되어 왔다. 얇은 층만 제거되었을 때,
이것은 저부조(얕은 돋을 새김)를 만들어 낸다. 이 결과물은 약간의 깊이만 있으며 여러 각도에서 이것들을 볼 수 있게 한다.
지난 1월 이탈리아에서, 나는 작품 중 하나에 ‘저부조’라는 개념을 적용 할 수 있는 방법을 생각해보았다. 내 실험은 곧 'Three Bas-Reliefs'라는 부제로 12분 길이의 3악장 구성을 가진
목관5중주가 되었다. 평평한 돌은 배경(Background)에서 함께 연주하는 악기그룹에 의해 표현 되었고 반면에, 나머지 악기 또는 악기들은 각 악장에서 명확하게 보여 질 수 있는 '형태'를 나타낸다.
첫 번째 악장은 플루트, 오보에, 클라리넷 및 바순에 대비되어 저부조의 호른을 특징으로 하였다. 두 번째 악장에서 오보에와 바순은 전경(foreground)이 된다. 마지막으로, 세 번째 악장에서
플루트와 바순은 음악이 멀리 사라질 때까지 강조된다.
전반적으로 화음과 멜로디 요소는 의도적으로 최소화되어 있으며 각 악장은 그림을 위한 적절한 배경을 제공하기 위해 매우 정확한 악상기호와 명확하고 잘 조정 된 어택(attacks)을 필요로 한다.

“I have always been fascinated by sculptures or carvings that are created by taking a flat stone or wooden base and removing small pieces until the desired artwork is clearly visible.
When only a thin layer is removed, it creates a bas-relief (low relief). The resulting figures have little depth, and this allows them to be viewed from multiple angles.
While in Italy this past January, I began to think about how I could apply the concept of bas-relief to one of my compositions. My experiment eventually became a 12-minute,
three-movement work for wind quintet with the subtitle, ‘Three Bas-Reliefs.’ The flat stone is represented by a group of instruments working together in the background while the remaining
instrument or instruments represent the ‘figure’ that becomes clearly visible (audible) during the course of each movement.
The first movement features the horn in bas-relief against the flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon. In the second movement, the oboe and bassoon move to the foreground. Finally,
in the third movement, the flute and bassoon are highlighted until the work dissolves into the distance.
Overall, the harmonic and melodic elements are intentionally minimal, and each movement demands extremely accurate articulations and clear, well-coordinated attacks in order to provide
the proper backdrop for the figure.”

Robert Carl

작곡가 로버트 칼의 음악은 뉴욕뿐 아니라 미국 전역과 전 세계에서 연주된다. 그의 작품은 피아노 솔로, 챔버, 오케스트라, 합창 및 전자음악까지 집중된다. 작품의 목표는 청취자에게 자유와 개방감을
제공하는 공간감을 만들어내는 것이다.
그는 National Endowment of the Arts, Chamber Music America, American Arts and Letters(1998 Charles Ives Fellowship 및 2106 Music Award)에서 수상하였다. MacDowell, Yaddo, UCross, Djerassi,
Millay, Bogliasco, Camargo, Copland House, Tokyo Wonder Site 및 Bellagio의 전속 작곡가로 활동하였으며 2007년에는 Asian Cultural Council Fellow로 3개월간 일본에 거주하였다.

Robert Carl’s music is performed regularly in New York, and throughout the US and abroad. It concentrates on solo piano, chamber, orchestral, choral, and electroacoustic media.
Its aim is to create a sense of space that provides the listener with a sense of freedom and openness.
He has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters(the 1998 Charles Ives Fellowship as well as a 2106 Music Award). Residencies include MacDowell, Yaddo, UCross, Djerassi, Millay, Bogliasco, Camargo, Copland House, Tokyo Wonder Site, and Bellagio. He lived in Japan for three months as an Asian Cultural Council
Fellow in 2007. He is the author of Terry Riley’s In C(Oxford University Press). In 2016 Bloomsbury Press released Jonathan Kramer’s posthumous text Postmodern Music, Postmodern Listening,
which Mr. Carl edited.
He is currently chair of Composition at the Hartt School, University of Hartford.

결국 연주자들의 목소리로 합류된) 사이에서 끊임없이 균형을 찾는 명상으로부터 비롯되었다. 그 과정엔 분투가 있다. 게다가, 이 변덕스러운 마음은 영감, 에너지 및 창조성면에서 우리에게
많은 것을 제공한다.
이 작품의 형태 역시 2개의 듀오(바이올린과 첼로), 솔로(각각 피아노, 비올라), 피아노 트리오와 피아노 4중주 등 다양한 형태의 편성으로 이 분투를 암시한다. 5중주는 큰 중반부의
"Contemplative Space-사색적인 공간"과 작품 마지막 부분에서 완전히 통합 된 앙상블로 사용된다. 그때까지, 나는 두 가지 사이에 어느 정도의 화해가 이루어지길 바라며, 제시된 정신적 감각과
영적성장이 어떤 좁은 종파적 관점이나 관행을 넘어서 사용되기를 바란다.
My quintet comes out of the experience of meditation, which is a constant search for a balance between the incessant chatter that the mind generates(the “monkey mind” of the opening piano solo),
and something more open, spacious, and calm(embodied in the glissandoing chorales for strings, eventually joined by the voices of the performers). Along the way, there is struggle. And indeed,
the monkey mind has much to give us, in terms of inspiration, energy, and creativity. The form of the piece also suggests this struggle by its diversity of formations, including two duos
(violin and cello), solos (piano and viola), piano trio, and piano quartet. The quintet is used as a fully integrated ensemble in the large middle “Contemplative Space” and at the end of the piece.
By that point, I hope some reconciliation is achieved between the two, and that the sense of mental and spiritual growth suggested has use beyond any narrowly sectarian outlook or practice.
